As a society we perform and display a wide variety of living history activities both as display pieces and as "have a go" activities for the public. Some of the activities that commonly happen on camp include:
On an open fire to authentic recipes of the time we show how the
diets of people of medieval England differed dramatically with their social standing. How tastes in food have radically
changed over 500 years but can still be traced through to its medieval origins.
Using bees wax and authentic methods and materials we both show and inform the public about many aspects of the craft
and related information about the economy of light before electricity.
Everything from preparing the raw wool to finishing a garment and everything in-between. We show how wool was treated
and washed before being carded, felted or dyed. Tablet looms, drop spinning and great wheel spinning is a regular camp
activity along with garment preparation and the ever present medieval activity of clothing alteration and repair. As well
as this there is a wealth of knowledge about changing styles of dress of the period and how this is related to social
standing.
Both the table top variety and the more adventurous field games are played on camp, from soldiers dice games to the
higher status games of backgammon the public are invited to have a go if you want to wager a few angels on the roll of
the die. We also explain the medieval origins of football or kingy and how they were both a pass time and a training
ground for combat.
And of course all of these activities are taught and explained at regular meetings off-season to anyone who wishes to join the society.
